Help and Support

Let us help you navigate the process of applying to study at Great Lakes from abroad.

Before you Arrive

As an international student, you'll need to consider if you need a visa to study in Canada and what type of visa you need to apply for.

When you Arrive

Arriving in a new country can be scary. To help you settle in, we have written some guidance on what we think you'll need to know when you first arrive, so all you need to do is enjoy the journey! When you arrive in Canada for study, there are a number of things that you will need to do. Firstly, we recommend that you read our guidance on arriving at Canada border to be sure that you are prepared for your arrival to the airport. Once you have entered Canada, you should make sure to attend the International Student Welcome Program if possible, as this will give you an introduction to the university and help you to find your feet. You may need to register with the police on arrival - this depends on your nationality. It's also really important to make sure that you register with a clinic when you arrive. We've explained this and given many other suggestions in our arrival tips.

During your Studies

The last thing you want to do is worry about your visa whilst you are here. But sometimes you'll have questions or will need to think about extending your visa. We've put together the most important things you need to know about your visa to make your stay in Canada as easy as possible.

Visa and Immigration Information for Current Students

It's important to know what you can and cannot do whilst you are in Canada and how to maintain your visa status. You also need to be aware how seemingly minor changes to your studies can affect your visa and what you need to do about this. If you can't find the information you are looking for, you can contact the International Student Advice Service at any point during your studies. One of our professional advisers will be more than happy to give you any help that you need.

After your Study

After you have finished your studies, you'll want to know what your options are. Whether you're going on to further studies, employment, or switching into another visa category, we've got all the information you need.
