Program Planning and Course Development

Using research-based best practices for online education, our team assists faculty and college instructional design teams with program planning, course design, development and review. Our collaborative, strategic approach to program planning can facilitate a full curriculum refresh or lay the groundwork for individual course development.

The collaboration begins with discussions about program parameters, requirements and aspirations. Whether the course is brand new or has been online for years, conversations with the Great Lakes team can enrich options and ideas available to faculty.

Student Experience Review

A crucial step in effective and sustainable asynchronous course design and delivery is a quality review process that examines course characteristics most relevant to student success. All of our recommendations will be grounded in best practices demonstrated to achieve student success and may include:

  • Course sequence and workload
  • Perceived ease of use of course and platform
  • Authentic assessments and practice opportunities to foster student learning outcomes
  • Opportunities for instructor interaction and presence including real-time engagement
  • Instructional design and strategies guided by evidence-based practice

Using a review format that aligns with best practices in online education–including Quality Matters and The Learning Consortium (LC), Great Lakes conducts an independent student experience review and a technical review that includes testing of links and navigation.

Faculty Support

We work in ongoing close alignment with the college's campus-based distance learning team and faculty members to achieve the shared goals of our partnership. Beginning with an on-campus launch with program faculty, we set milestones, timelines and objectives for the sustained success of online programs. Our professional development is geared to help each faculty member explore and develop their own teaching practice as part of a community of scholars. Hands-on and customized opportunities include:

  • Support in the design of program planning and the course carousel
  • On-campus face-to-face and virtual faculty workshops
  • Course mapping and course acceleration consultation
  • Guidance on research-based best practices for student experience review
  • Resources and how-tos on the latest learning technologies and innovation in online teaching and learning
  • Semi-annual sponsored research grant opportunities focused on online innovation
